1.48

復有四事：一見眾生生於八難不聞正法不知修善。二見眾生值佛出世聞說正法不能受持。三見眾生染習外道苦身修業永不出離。四見眾生修得非想非非想定謂是涅槃，善報既盡還墮三塗。菩薩見諸眾生無明造業，長夜受苦，捨離正法，迷於出路，為是等故，發大慈悲，志求菩提，如救頭然。一切眾生有苦惱者，我當拔濟令無有餘。諸佛子我今略說初行菩薩緣事發心。

Furthermore, there are four matters: First, seeing sentient beings born in the eight conditions of adversity, not hearing the true Dharma, and not knowing how to cultivate goodness. Second, seeing sentient beings encountering the appearance of a Buddha in the world and hearing the true Dharma expounded, yet unable to accept and uphold it. Third, seeing sentient beings tainted by and practicing non-Buddhist teachings, afflicting their bodies to cultivate karma, and never attaining escape. Fourth, seeing sentient beings cultivating and attaining the concentration of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, claiming it to be nirvāṇa, and once their wholesome retribution is exhausted, falling back into the three wretched destinies. The bodhisattva, seeing all sentient beings generating karma through ignorance, enduring suffering throughout the long night, abandoning the true Dharma, and losing their way out, for the sake of these [beings], arouses great compassion, resolutely seeks bodhi as if saving their head from burning, [resolving:] 'All sentient beings who suffer from distress, I shall deliver and rescue them without remainder.' O sons of the Buddha, I have now briefly explained the initial-practice bodhisattva's arousal of the mind based on circumstances.
