"Good sons! For you who cultivate the path, forbearance comes first. Why is this? Formerly, there was a man named Gaowang who went forth, received the precepts, held his teacher in contempt, and constantly harbored arrogance; toward his fellow practitioners on the path, he did likewise, disputing, becoming angry and wrathful, and indulging his speech in the four faults. After his life ended, he fell into the great hells; though seven Buddhas passed, he still could not emerge, and only after the end of the Bhadrakalpa could he escape the calamity. The kalpas of his residual retribution cannot be fully told. Therefore, in cultivating the path, one must first practice forbearance. Furthermore, there was a man who was a great king, named ...luka, who was conquered and destroyed by King Dazhen. The king had a son named Xinzhu. After his father was destroyed, he hid his body and lived concealed. When he grew up, being poor and without possessions, he was sent to serve the king. At that time, the king was on an excursion; his bodily strength was utterly exhausted, and he lost his retinue. Together with the king, the two arrived at the edge of a body of water, and he entered to bathe with the king. At that time, the king sank down; Xinzhu pulled him out, grasped the king's hair with his hand, and held him over the deep abyss. Xinzhu said to the king: 'I am the son of Dazhen. The king killed my father; you are my great enemy. I have heard that an enemy of one's father cannot share the same heaven as a canopy, and an enemy of one's brother cannot walk in the same country. Taking advantage of this perilous situation, this cannot be endured; the king must meet death!' The king replied: 'A hundred deaths would hold no resentment.' Xinzhu replied: 'I will not kill the king; I only wish to let the king know. Avenging resentment is like a carriage wheel that has no end; only through non-retaliation and harmony does resentment cease.' He then helped the king mount his horse and together they returned to the kingdom. Having returned to the kingdom, [the king] assembled his ministers and asked: 'Now that I have obtained the prince of Dazhen, should he be rewarded or beheaded?' The ministers all said: 'The son of a ruined kingdom must not be rewarded; he should be killed.' The king then recounted the previous matter in detail, gave his daughter to him as a wife, returned his original kingdom to him, and the king himself returned to govern his own country. Good sons! The mind of a bodhisattva is vast as mountains and oceans; within it are contained limitless goods and evils. If even toward an enemy one still forbears, how much more so toward other angers and wrath! In the present life one receives pleasant fruition in the central lands, and later is born among the heavens, up to the great fruit. Therefore, for one who upholds the precepts, the power of forbearance is supreme."
