(Husband and Wife Exhorting One Another) The Upāsakaśīla-sūtra says: “Good sons, formerly in the past I fell into a household of wrong views, and perhaps my own good roots were bound. At that time my name was Guangli (Vast Benefit), and my wife's name was Nü. She was energetic and valiant, delivering countless beings and guiding them through the ten wholesome actions. At that time, hunting and killing arose in my mind; I was greedy for and indulged in wine and meat, lazy and indolent, unable to be energetic. My wife then said to me: ‘Cease your hunting and killing, abstain from wine and meat, and diligently exert yourself; then you can be freed from the suffering and afflictions of hell, and be reborn in the heavenly palaces in the same place as me.’ At that time, my urge to kill did not cease, I could not renounce the fine flavors of wine and meat, and my mind of vigor was lazy and made no progress. I gave up on the heavenly palaces and accepted my share of hell. At that time I lived within a village, near a saṅghārāma, and frequently heard the sound of the gaṇḍī bell. My wife said to me: ‘Even if you cannot do anything else, when you hear the sound of the gaṇḍī bell, snap your fingers three times, invoke the Buddha once, collect your body in reverence, and do not give rise to arrogance. Even if it is midnight, do not neglect this practice.’ I thereupon followed it and never abandoned or lost it. After twelve years, my wife died and was reborn in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven; three years later, my life also came to an end. Passing to the adjudication of deeds, I was judged to be guilty and sent toward the gate of hell. Just as I was about to enter the gate, the bell sounded three times. I immediately stopped and stood, joy arose in my mind, loving and delighting [in the sound] without weariness; in accordance with the Dharma, I snapped my fingers three times and called upon the Buddha in a long voice, with sounds full of compassion, the brahma-voice resonating clearly. Hearing this, the adjudicator felt deep shame and inspiration: ‘This is a true bodhisattva; why was he wrongly judged?’ He immediately had me recalled and sent up to heaven. After arriving there, I threw my five limbs to the ground, paid homage to my wife, and said: ‘Great teacher! Fortunately, receiving your great kindness, I have been rescued; until I attain bodhi, I will not disobey your instructions.’ For this reason, by serving as teachers to one another, each attained a great fruit. You all must listen attentively, faithfully accept, and obediently practice this.”
