All dhyāna: briefly, there are two kinds: mundane and supramundane. Each of these includes abiding in happiness in the present life, inducing the virtues of bodhisattva samādhi, and benefiting sentient beings. All dhyāna that has ease of body and mind, is free from faults, and effaces marks is called abiding in happiness in the present life. That which can induce the liberations, aspirational knowledge, and so forth of the ten directions is called capable of inducing. Dhyāna that benefits [sentient beings] has eleven kinds, as should be understood from what was said before. That is, bodhisattvas rely on dhyāna to induce benefit for sentient beings, acting as companions in their various undertakings, removing their suffering, speaking in accordance with reason to sentient beings, recognizing kindness and repaying it to those who have been kind, rescuing those who are terrified, dispelling sorrow for those who have suffered losses, bestowing various wholesome gifts upon the destitute, guiding sentient beings and skillfully adapting to their minds, praising and delighting those who genuinely possess virtue, correctly subduing those with faults, and displaying supernormal powers to terrify, attract, and gather beings. These are called all dhyāna.
