3.20

次教發菩提心云：「菩提心者，廣則無邊，略有三種：一者厭離有為心、二者欣求菩提心、三者深念眾生心。厭離有為心者，即是廣說生死過患，令深生厭離，五法相似，生死大海。得大海名，一處所無邊相似故，二甚深相似故，三難度相似故，四不可飲相似故，五大寶所依相似故。求菩提心者，即是廣說三身菩提所有功德，令起忻求。深念眾生心者，即是廣說怨親等想，令俱生慈愍發心度脫。」

Next, instruct them to arouse the bodhicitta, saying: "The mind of bodhi is broadly limitless, but in brief it has three kinds: first, the mind of revulsion toward the conditioned; second, the mind of joyous seeking of bodhi; third, the mind of deep concern for sentient beings. The mind of revulsion toward the conditioned means explaining in detail the faults of saṃsāra, causing deep revulsion to arise. Five things resemble the great ocean of saṃsāra: it receives the name 'great ocean' because, first, its extent is limitless; second, it is extremely deep; third, it is difficult to cross; fourth, it cannot be drunk; and fifth, it is the dwelling place of great treasures. The mind of seeking bodhi means explaining in detail all the virtues of the three bodies of bodhi, causing joyous seeking to arise. The mind of deep concern for sentient beings means explaining in detail the equal perception of enemies and friends, causing compassionate pity to arise together with the resolution to deliver them."
