Furthermore, when white-robed laypeople dwell in the world, holding official posts, managing affairs, and laboring in household enterprises, it is therefore difficult to maintain practices such as avoiding harsh speech. The five precepts have five ways of being undertaken, termed the five kinds of upāsakas: first, one-part practice; second, small-part practice; third, major-part practice; fourth, full-part practice; fifth, severing sexual misconduct. Undertaking one is called one-part; two or three is called small-part; undertaking four is called major-part; undertaking five is called full-part. After receiving the five precepts, one further makes a vow before the teacher, saying: "From now on, I will no longer engage in sexual relations even with my own wife." These are the five precepts. However, the method for receiving the eight precepts follows the standard ritual (analogous to the Three Refuges, also for one day and one night).
