The Bodhisattvabhūmi, fascicle forty, states: If a bodhisattva violates any one of the four dharmas of defeat (pārājika), let alone all of them, they are no longer capable in this present life of increasing and gathering the vast provisions for the bodhisattva's bodhi, nor are they capable in this present life of purity of intention; such a one is called a counterfeit bodhisattva, not a true bodhisattva. If a bodhisattva transgresses the four dharmas of defeat with a mild or middling entanglement, they do not forfeit the pure bodhisattva precepts of restraint. Violating them with a superior entanglement is precisely termed forfeiture. If bodhisattvas transgress the four dharmas of defeat, engaging in them repeatedly, entirely without shame or conscience, taking deep delight in them, and regarding them as virtues, you should know that this is termed transgression with a superior entanglement.
