Furthermore, when bodhisattvas wish to receive the pure bodhisattva precepts of restraint, if they do not encounter a person endowed with virtues, at that time they should receive the pure bodhisattva precepts of restraint by themselves before an image of the Tathāgata. They should receive them as follows: baring the right shoulder, placing the right knee on the ground, or kneeling, they make this statement: 'I, of such-and-such name, reverently address all Tathāgatas of the ten directions and the assembly of bodhisattvas who have entered the great bhūmis: I now wish, in the presence of the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the worlds in the ten directions, to vow to receive all the bodhisattva śikṣāpadas, and vow to receive all the pure bodhisattva precepts, namely the precepts of restraint, the precepts of collecting wholesome dharmas, and the precepts of benefiting sentient beings. Such śikṣāpadas and such pure precepts all past bodhisattvas have already possessed, all future bodhisattvas will possess, and all present bodhisattvas everywhere throughout the ten directions now possess. In such śikṣāpadas and in such pure precepts, all past bodhisattvas have already trained, all future bodhisattvas will train, and all present bodhisattvas everywhere throughout the ten directions are now training.' They state this a second and third time as well, and having spoken, they should rise. All the rest should be understood as conforming to the method of receiving [the precepts] as previously explained.
