There are two ways in which bodhisattvas teach the Dharma to others: first, expounding in conformity [with Vinaya]; second, expounding with purity. 'Expounding in conformity' is as explained in the *Prātimokṣasūtra*. As for 'expounding with purity': toward sentient beings who bear enmity toward oneself, one should dwell in a mind of loving-kindness to teach them the true Dharma. Toward those of evil conduct, one should dwell in a mind of benefit to teach them the true Dharma. Toward sentient beings who lack joy, are afflicted with suffering, or are heedless and base, one should dwell in a mind of benefit, happiness, and pity to teach them the true Dharma. One does not praise oneself and disparage others through the predominant power of the bond of jealousy, and with an undefiled mind, without hoping for material gain, reverence, or praise, one teaches the Dharma to others.
