When this lay bodhisattva who already admires and aspires to renunciant life enters a stūpa or monastery and pays homage to the Buddha, he should give rise to three thoughts: first, 'When will I receive offerings from the eight classes [of beings]?'; second, 'When will I obtain supernormal powers, so that relics are distributed throughout the world to benefit sentient beings?'; third, 'Practising great vīrya with deep resolve now to attain great bodhi, after becoming a Buddha, I shall enter remainderless nirvāṇa.'
