As for the afflictions abandoned by the subsequent sixteen minds, these are also of two kinds, namely [the contemplation of] grasper and grasped, and [the contemplation of] the higher and lower truths. Though these two kinds differ, the number of afflictions abandoned is the same and without distinction; here we rely solely on the contemplation of grasper and grasped. The Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya and other texts state that under the truth of suffering there are four minds: First, the patience with the cognition of the doctrine of suffering, which contemplates the tathatā of the truth of suffering of the three realms and directly abandons the twenty-eight kinds of intellectually formed latencies abandoned by seeing [the truth of] suffering in the three realms. Explanation: The truth of suffering in the desire realm possesses ten afflictions, namely the ten fundamental ones. The truth of suffering in the two higher realms has nine each, because anger is absent above. Therefore, the three realms have only twenty-eight. Since this is so for the truth of suffering in the three realms, the three truths of origin, cessation, and the path, taking the three realms collectively, each likewise have twenty-eight. Totalling all four truths, there are one hundred and twelve intellectually formed afflictions, which are eliminated in mimetic seeing. Question: Since intellectually formed ones are completely abandoned in the actual path of seeing, how could there still be intellectually formed afflictions said to be abandoned in mimetic [seeing]? Answer: In terms of the actual principle, mimetic seeing does not abandon afflictions; it is only by analogy to the actual that it is metaphorically said to abandon them. Question: Why is there no anger in the higher realms? Answer: Anger is exclusively unwholesome. In the upper two realms, due to the power of concentration, there is nothing unwholesome.
