Third, as for discerning their characteristics: Question: Does merely [practicing] giving and the others immediately merit the name pāramitā, or is that not so?

Answer: There are cases where it merits it and where it does not. Thus the Cheng weishi lun states: "Only when subsumed by the seven superiorities can a pāramitā be established: 1. Superiority of abiding, meaning one must abide in the bodhisattva lineage. 2. Superiority of reliance, meaning one must rely on the mind of great bodhi. 3. Superiority of inclination, meaning one must have compassion for all sentient beings. 4. Superiority of activities, meaning one must fully carry out all undertakings. 5. Superiority of skillful means, meaning one must be embraced by the wisdom of signlessness. 6. Superiority of dedication, meaning one must dedicate toward unsurpassed bodhi. 7. Superiority of purity, meaning one must not be interrupted by the two obstructions. If not subsumed by these seven, even if one practices giving and so forth, it is merely called giving and the like; it cannot be called reaching the other shore."
