The stages and practices of the One Vehicle possess profound principles and extensive phenomenal expressions. If one is not of consummate virtue, what else could one say? Hence, in the great stages of equal enlightenment, the moon of the grains is still shrouded; in the small stages of the śrāvakas, the gem in the garment is still hidden. If their wisdom is like that, how much more so for the deaf and the blind! Yet, as waves arise because of the ocean and radiance shines relying on the sun, since things are like this, why would the Dharma not be present? Thus, relying on the sacred words, I have compiled these stages, presenting them to like-minded companions in the hope that their cultivation may have an orderly thread. As this aspiration has not yet been fully exhausted, I repeat it in verse: / Relying on the words of the holy ones, / I have distinguished the stages and practices of the Mahāyāna, / Hoping that through this merit all sentient beings / May abide permanently and attain equal awakening.
