"Vast and surging" has the meaning of deep and broad. "Three storehouses" means active storehouse, passive storehouse, and storehouse of attachment. That is, in terms of holding seeds it is called the active storehouse; in terms of receiving perfuming it is called the passive storehouse; and the seventh [consciousness's] grasping [it] as a self is called the storehouse of attachment. Thus the verse states: "All phenomena are stored in the consciousness, / and the consciousness is likewise in all phenomena; / they are mutually the nature of effect, / and constantly also the nature of cause." The meaning of this verse is that the ālayavijñāna and the active consciousnesses produce one another at all times, being mutually cause and effect. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha says that the ālayavijñāna and defiled phenomena are mutually cause and condition; this [verse] is cited to state that. This eighth consciousness possesses the meanings of the three storehouses, and its essence and functions are deep and broad, which is why ordinary beings and the Hīnayāna fail to comprehend it. Furthermore, the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra states: "The ādānavijñāna is profoundly deep and subtle," which has already appeared in the commentary above; this verse was cited to prove the meaning of the name "appropriating and holding," thereby showing the reason why the ordinary and foolish do not comprehend it.
