This means that the sixth consciousness alone is able to create the two karmas of leading and completing, and this karma can attract the two fruitions of overall and distinct retribution. Because the preeminent power of karma can pull along, it is called leading karma; because it rounds out the overall fruition, it is called completing karma. It is just like a painter master and apprentice making a template and filling in the colors; the meaning can thus be understood. Therefore the treatise states: 'One karma leads one fruition; multiple karmas can complete it.' Karma's attracting fruitions has four cases: one karma leads one fruition, one karma leads multiple fruitions, multiple karmas lead one fruition, and multiple karmas lead multiple fruitions. This sixth consciousness can create karma and attract fruitions; a part of the good and evil of the first five can also create them; while the seventh and eighth consciousnesses cannot create karma, because of their avyākṛta nature. If we discuss the eight consciousnesses attracting karma to become fruition, it is only the eighth and a part of the first six; if not attracted by karma, it is only the seventh and also a part of the first six, because of their good and unwholesome natures. What is called overall retribution is the host of a single fruition in the good or bad destinies; what is called distinct retribution refers to longevity, premature death, nobility, baseness, beauty, ugliness, and so forth.
