This speaks of the realms and grounds of the five consciousnesses. That is, the desire realm (the three of eating and drinking, sleep, and sexual desire), the Ground Where the Five Destinies Dwell Together, and the form realm, the Ground of Joy and Bliss Born of Separation of the first dhyāna. In the three dhyānas above these, since vitarka and vicāra are absent, consciousness does not arise, because the dharmas of these grounds are free from the defilement of vitarka and vicāra. This line of verse elides the nose and tongue consciousnesses, which belong to one realm and one ground, only the Ground Where the Five Destinies Dwell Together of the desire realm, because in the heavens of the dhyānas above there is no kavaḍīkārāhāra—kavaḍīkārāhāra takes the three dharmas of fragrance, taste, and tangibility as its substance—and since kavaḍīkārāhāra is absent, these two consciousnesses do not arise. The absence of this food is because kavaḍīkārāhāra is loathed by the dhyāna heavens.
