These various worthies of the ten houses who established teachings above were all Dharma generals of their times, possessing peerless, brilliant discernment, serving as shining models through the generations, their spiritual stages being unfathomable. Take Dhyāna Master Si and Dhyāna Master Zhizhe: their miraculous resonances were profound, their traces reaching the stages of the noble, and their memory of listening to the Dharma on Vulture Peak remained vivid even in their contemporary lives. Their various other miraculous responses are recorded extensively in the Biographies of Eminent Monks. Take also Master Yun: relying on this, he established a tenet and lectured on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, eliciting heavenly rain of flowers and so forth, his miraculous traces being as in the Biographies of Eminent Monks. The practice and understanding of the other masters were likewise peerless, also as recorded in the Biographies of Eminent Monks. How could these worthies have been fond of novelty? It was merely that, having fully investigated the Tripiṭaka and observed these divergent tracks, they could not but divide them. Consequently, each opened a tenet relying on the teachings, striving to preserve integration and synthesis, causing hardened doubts and immense blockages to melt away like ice and become brilliantly clear, so that each corresponded appropriately to the differences among the sacred teachings.
