問：「又以何義知種性至堪任位耶？」答：「以論說種性必具性、習，既已有習，必已修行。若已修行，必至堪任。若不從愚夫至堪任已來，中間修此串習行者，更何位修也。以於愚位未修習故，得位已去具第二住故。是故當知，從愚位未修串習行，至彼堪任串習方成，故得性、習通融以為種性。」

Question: "Furthermore, by what principle is it known that gotra reaches the stage of competence?" Answer: "Because the treatise states that gotra necessarily possesses both nature and practice. Since practice already exists, one must have already cultivated practice. If one has already cultivated practice, one must have reached competence. If one did not cultivate this repeated practice in the intermediate interval from an ordinary foolish person up to competence, in what other stage would one cultivate it? For in the foolish stage one has not yet cultivated practice, whereas after attaining the stage, one possesses the second abode. Therefore, one should know that from the foolish stage, where one has not yet cultivated repeated practice, up to that competence, repeated practice is only then perfected; hence, nature and practice blend harmoniously to constitute gotra."
