Tenth, within the particular characteristics of the ten bhūmis, it provisionally clarifies the distinctions among the three stages of the mundane, the Three Vehicles, and the bodhisattva. The Renwang jing says: 'The first three bhūmis cut off defilements of form in the three realms; the fourth, fifth, and sixth bhūmis cut off defilements of mind in the three realms; the seventh, eighth, and ninth bhūmis cut off defilements of form-traces in the three realms; the tenth bhūmi and the buddha stage cut off defilements of mind-traces in the three realms.' The commentary explains: Because at the concluding stage of the third bhūmi one attains the concentrations of the higher realms, reaching up to the four formless concentrations, one departs from the form of the lower realms, and therefore it says 'cuts off defilements of form.' Because from the fourth bhūmi onward one attains the supramundane stage of the taintless state of the Two Vehicles, both mundane form and mind are exhausted. From the seventh bhūmi onward is the bodhisattva stage, which is progressively subtler than before; hence, it provisionally assigns the extinction of the traces of form and mind to clarify those stages.
