Second, concerning opening and combining: there are two parts—first the specific, then the general. Within the specific, the One Vehicle and the Three Vehicles each have three propositions. As for the three propositions of the Three Vehicles: they may possess both teaching and meaning, spoken from the perspective of the Three Vehicles' own tenet; they may be teaching only and not meaning, spoken from the perspective of the common teaching One Vehicle; or they may be neither teaching nor meaning, spoken from the perspective of the distinct teaching One Vehicle, because they are indicated by the latter. As for the three propositions of the One Vehicle: it may possess both teaching and meaning, spoken from the perspective of its own distinct teaching; it may be meaning only and not teaching, spoken from the perspective of the common teaching; or it may be neither teaching nor meaning, spoken purely from the perspective of the teaching of the Three Vehicles, because the inexhaustible teaching and meaning of the former are concealed. Next, as for the general: both teaching and meaning may be entirely teaching, when looking from the Three Vehicles toward the One Vehicle; or both teaching and meaning may be entirely meaning, when looking from the One Vehicle toward the Three Vehicles; or possessing these three propositions may be spoken from the perspective of the common teaching; or all of them may possess both teaching and meaning, spoken respectively according to the distinctions of their own tenets.
