If relying on the sudden teaching, all stages of practice are ineffable, because they are free from characteristics, and a single thought not arising is itself the Buddha. If one sees characteristics such as differences in stages of practice, that is an inversion. If expressing it provisionally through words, as the Laṅkāvatāra says: "The first stage is itself the eighth stage," down to saying, "When there is nothing, what sequence can there be?" and so forth. Furthermore, the Siyi jing says: "If a person hears this correct nature of all phenomena, practices diligence, and cultivates as taught, they do not proceed from one stage to another stage. If one does not proceed from one stage to another stage, this person does not abide in saṃsāra or nirvāṇa." Such passages as these [illustrate the point].
