In the initial teaching, for śrāvakas who turn their minds, it also explains the fragmentary body up to the ultimate stage, and the Buddha's body is likewise. However, this is an apparition, not real. According to those who advance directly, there are two explanations: First, in terms of provisional assignment of stages, revealing the differentiated characteristics of the coarse and subtle stages of effort and effortlessness within the ten stages, it explains that the seventh stage and below have the fragmentary body, while the eighth stage and above have the transformation body. Second, regarding the real recompense, it explains that the fragmentary body lasts up to the vajropama [samādhi] and below, because within the ten stages the seeds of afflictive obscurations have not yet been permanently severed and are retained until the vajropama. Since there are defilements and obscurations, how could one not receive a fragmentary body? Therefore, the *Daśabhūmika-sūtra* says: 'The tenth stage and below still have the intermediate existence,' which is this meaning.
