Fourteenth, as to the three conditions upon which conceptually constructed afflictions rely: by provisionally assigning [their abandonment, the scriptures] reveal the distinctions among the three stages of the worthy prior to the bhūmis—namely, that the ten understandings and so on eliminate false teachers and so forth, as should be understood in sequence. This is spoken with regard to those who proceed directly [to Mahāyāna]. Furthermore, that which arises from false teachers and false teachings is provisionally assigned to be subdued at the stage of provision, because its cognitive aspect is coarse; that which arises from improper reflection is provisionally assigned to be subdued at the stage of applied practice, because its cognitive aspect is subtle. This is spoken with regard to the two vehicles who turn the mind.
