Question: What differences are there in the various trainings in precepts and so forth? Answer: In accordance with the differences among persons, there are eight kinds. The eight precepts and the precepts upheld by the seven assemblies together make up the single prātimokṣa precept, because it is distinct from [the precepts of] concentration and the path. Because they are cultivated and upheld separately, they are named distinct (prāti-). The two precepts of concentration and the path, together with the aforementioned prātimokṣa, make up three precepts in total. These three precepts are also shared by the three karmas, because they follow what is corresponding. The bodhisattvas of the triyāna have three distinct precepts, namely: the ten inexhaustible precepts, the twenty-four precepts, and the four pārājika precepts. Among these three precepts, the four pārājika precepts are received by renunciants, while the other two precepts are received by laypeople. They are divided into two, upper and lower; such are their meaningful characteristics. The essence of the precept is either the five kinds of ten goods; or manifest and unmanifest—unmanifest being the principle of matter, mind, and affairs that is cittaviprayukta; or it is simply the Ekayāna, because it responds to the dharmadhātu.
