Question: How do the approaches to concentration differ? Answer: For instance, the eight dhyānas and concentrations are broadly identical in name to the Hīnayāna; among them, according to whether the person is wrong or right, and according to the distinctions of the flow of wisdom being with outflows or without outflows, their fundamental natures are entirely different. With regard to the approach of the noble ones, the stages of the Ekayāna, the triyāna, and the various Hīnayānas all jointly use these concentrations; according to the differences in what is accomplished, they obtain different names. In the stages of the triyāna, bodhisattvas of direct advancement have eight distinct concentrations and so forth: before the grounds there are four, such as the concentration of luminous virtue; on the grounds there are four, such as Śūraṅgama and so forth. According to the Ekayāna teaching, there are ten kinds and so forth, as spoken in the Avataṃsaka; their fundamental natures, virtues, and measures are all completely different.
