Furthermore, concerning the vehicles in the various sūtras and treatises, there are four kinds: First, two vehicles, namely the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna, because within expedient means they are divided into two according to progressing from teaching toward fruition. Second, three vehicles, namely the Great Vehicle, the Middle Vehicle, and the Small Vehicle, because within expedient means they are divided into three according to fulfilling practice from principle. Third, based on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, the Ekayāna, the triyāna, and the Hīnayāna, which within the gates of teaching fulfill the nature of capacities and desires, revealing that the distinctions between the root and branches of the teachings are not the same. Fourth, based on the Lotus Sūtra, the triyāna and the Ekayāna, distinguishing substance, characteristics, expedient means, and definitiveness across realms as not the same. Moreover, speaking of numbers, namely two and three, each extends to the intention of three and two meanings, and is spoken of accordingly. That 'two extends to three' refers to Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, śrāvaka and pratyekabuddha, and Ekayāna and triyāna. That 'three extends to two' has two intentional meanings: namely Great Vehicle, Middle Vehicle, and Small Vehicle, and Ekayāna, triyāna, and Hīnayāna; their intents are each distinct, and can be understood by considering them accordingly. Furthermore, according to the sūtra text below, there are either one, two, or three; or four, namely Ekayāna and triyāna; or five, namely the triyāna, humans, and devas; or immeasurable, namely all dharma gates; this is spoken according to the beginning and the end.
