Second, how is it that "initial arising is unobtainable"? Suppose someone were to raise an objection, saying: "If there were an ālayavijñāna, then two consciousnesses would arise together in a single sentient being." One should answer them: "You falsely conceive a fault where there is no fault. It is possible for two consciousnesses to operate simultaneously. Why is this? Just as when a single person simultaneously wishes to see and even wishes to cognize, it is unreasonable for merely one consciousness to arise initially. Why is this? At that time, their attention is without difference, and their sense faculties and sense objects are uninjured and present before them; for what reason would the consciousnesses not operate simultaneously?"
