Fourth, how is it that "the nature of seeds is unobtainable"? Because the six evolving consciousnesses are each mutually distinct. Why is this? These six evolving consciousnesses arise as unwholesome immediately after being wholesome, arise as wholesome again immediately after being unwholesome, and arise as indeterminate immediately after either of the two; they arise in the intermediate realm immediately after the lower realm, arise in the superior realm immediately after the intermediate realm, and arise even in the lower realm immediately after the superior realm; they arise as undefiled immediately after being defiled, and arise as defiled immediately after being undefiled; they arise as supramundane immediately after being mundane, and arise as mundane immediately after being supramundane. That a consciousness of such characteristics should be the substance of seeds does not conform to sound principle. Furthermore, their mental continuity is interrupted for long periods, yet [seeds must] stream along continuously over a long time without ceasing. Therefore, that evolving consciousnesses could hold seeds is unreasonable.
