The four immeasurables are: first, loving-kindness; second, compassion; third, sympathetic joy; fourth, equanimity. The immeasurables take three conditions: first, conditioned by sentient beings; second, conditioned by dharmas; third, unconditioned. Conditioned by sentient beings means giving rise to loving-kindness conditioned by sentient beings. Conditioned by dharmas means giving rise to loving-kindness conditioned by dharmas such as the aggregates. Unconditioned means giving rise to loving-kindness conditioned by the selflessness of dharmas. Joy and equanimity are also like this. In the Triyāna and Hīnayāna, this [third] meaning does not exist, and there is only that conditioned by sentient beings. In the Ekayāna, the meanings are complete. Why? Because dependent arising is inexhaustible. If one identifies their substance: in the Hīnayāna, conventional cognition is their nature; the initial teaching takes subsequent cognition as their substance; the final teaching takes cognition as it is and cognition in its full extent as their substance. Why? Because non-conceptual cognition is the bodhisattva's substance. In the meaning of the Ekayāna, because of being inexhaustible and because the knowable is boundless, they are called immeasurable. The remaining meanings are as in the separate chapter.
