Regarding the six recollections, they are: mindfulness of the Buddha, mindfulness of the Dharma, mindfulness of the Saṅgha, mindfulness of morality, mindfulness of giving, and mindfulness of deities. The purpose of this teaching's arising is to solidify the faithful mind for beginners. Furthermore, there are eight recollections, namely: mindfulness of the Buddha, mindfulness of the Dharma, mindfulness of the Saṅgha, mindfulness of morality, mindfulness of giving, mindfulness of deities, mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation, and mindfulness of death. These eight recollections are taught for those who progress in cultivation. Furthermore, there are ten recollections: 1. Constantly generating a mind of loving-kindness toward all sentient beings and not damaging their practices; if one damages their practices, one will ultimately not attain rebirth. 2. Deeply generating a mind of compassion toward all sentient beings, eliminating any mind of cruelty. 3. Generating a mind to protect the Dharma without begrudging bodily life, generating no slander toward any dharmas. 4. Generating a resolute mind in patience. 5. Having a deeply pure mind, untainted by gain and sustenance. 6. Generating the mind of sarvākārajñatā, constantly mindful of it every day without neglect. 7. Generating a mind of respect toward all sentient beings, eliminating arrogance, and speaking humbly. 8. Not generating a mind of attachment to worldly talk. 9. Approaching factors of awakening, deeply generating the causes and conditions of various wholesome roots, and departing from a bustling and scattered mind. 10. Correctly mindful in contemplating the Buddha, eliminating all conceptual thoughts. How should one be mindful? Being mindful without ordinary foolishness, being mindful without unwholesomeness, and being mindful without mixed fetters, one will attain rebirth in the Land of Peace and Sustenance. The purpose of this teaching's arising is for practitioners seeking rebirth. Furthermore, there are ten recollections: 1. pure mind, 2. immovable mind, 3. revulsion mind, 4. desire-free mind, 5. non-retrogressing mind, 6. firm mind, 7. brilliant mind, 8. mellow and deep mind, 9. joyous mind, 10. great mind, as extensively explained in the Daśabhūmika-śāstra. The former two [sets of] recollections belong to the Hīnayāna and extend to the initial teaching; the next [set of] recollections resides in the initial teaching and extends to the final teaching; the latter [set of] recollections resides in the Ekayāna and extends to the Triyāna. The remaining meanings are as in the separate chapter.
