Regarding the nine successive meditative attainments, they are: the first dhyāna, second dhyāna, third dhyāna, fourth dhyāna, the base of boundless space, the base of boundless consciousness, the base of nothingness, the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and the attainment of cessation. Arising from the mind of the first dhyāna, one next enters the second dhyāna without allowing any other mind to enter, whether wholesome or defiled. Thus up to the concentration that diminishes minds of sensation and perception, entering and emerging without skipping over, it is called successive meditative attainment. This meaning belongs to the Triyāna and is also used across the Hīnayāna. If designated by the Ekayāna teaching, it belongs to the Ekayāna. The remaining meanings are as in the separate chapter.
