Regarding the eight persons, they are the eight forbearances in the path of vision. Distinguishing them from cognitions, because their power is essential, they separately receive the name 'persons'. These eight persons apply across the Ekayāna, Triyāna, and Hīnayāna. The eight persons of the Hīnayāna are shallow, as they have not exhausted the emptiness of persons. The eight persons of the initial teaching are next in depth, but have not exhausted the principle of the non-self of dharmas. In the mature teaching, the virtue of the non-self of dharmas is still not ultimate. Only in the Ekayāna dharmadhātu is it clearly understood. Now, when the sutra below speaks of 'those who clearly understand dharmas', both the distinct teaching and the shared teaching of the Ekayāna comprehensively integrate and understand the preceding virtues of practice; hence they are named 'those who clearly understand dharmas', which should be known. The remaining meanings are as in the separate chapter.
