The five turbidities are: first, the lifespan turbidity; second, the sentient being turbidity; third, the affliction turbidity; fourth, the view turbidity; fifth, the kalpa turbidity. 'Turbidity' means the sense of being unclean. A lifespan of one hundred years or below is the lifespan turbidity. Not recognizing the venerable and the lowly, not respecting superiors, nor receiving inferiors, is called the sentient being turbidity. The increase of unlawful greed, knives, swords, weapons, lawsuits, strife, flattery, deception, false speech, accepting false teachings, and so forth, is called the affliction turbidity. The gradual arising of wrong views, the destruction of the Buddha-Dharma, and the progressive increase of false teachings, is called the view turbidity. The arising of kalpas of famine, epidemics, and warfare, is called the kalpa turbidity. According to the texts of the sūtras and treatises, if one generates a single moment of true loving-kindness toward sentient beings, giving a single morsel of food and a single pill of medicine, one will not be born in the kalpa of the five turbidities. These turbidities are in the Hīnayāna; in the initial teaching they are identical to emptiness; in the final teaching they are identical to suchness; in the Ekayāna they are simply the dharmadhātu, as should be understood accordingly.
