The eight precepts are day-and-night precepts received by the white-robed (laity): first, not killing living beings; second, not stealing; third, not engaging in sexual intercourse; fourth, not lying; fifth, not drinking alcohol; sixth, not sitting on high and broad beds; seventh, not wearing flower garlands, fragrances, and necklaces, not perfuming the body with ointments, and not scenting garments with incense; eighth, not engaging in singing, dancing, and music, nor going to watch and listen, and not eating past noon. Among these eight precepts, the first four are the precept portion, the next one is the non-negligence portion, and the last three are the cultivation-accordant portion. This meaning exists in the Triyāna, Hīnayāna, humans, devas, and the like, and it also applies to the Ekayāna, since it is designated by the Ekayāna and constitutes an expedient means when dedicated toward the Ekayāna. The remaining meanings are as in the separate section.
