There are also ten kinds of Buddha-dharma phrases, further ten kinds of expounding the Dharma, further ten kinds of exposition, and in the three times there are further ten kinds of expounding the mind of Samantabhadra, and further ten kinds of expounding the dharmas of Samantabhadra's vows and practices; all of these are the distinctive teaching. The Ekayāna approaches are expounded extensively as in the 'Detachment from the World' chapter. There are also the Triyāna dharmas of names, as the Mahāyānasaṃgraha (Shelun) states: 'Names of dharmas and persons, names of dharmas and meanings, essential, brief, and extensive names, defiled, pure, and ultimate: the objects of the distinction of ten names.' Explanation: Names have ten kinds and are the sphere of bodhisattvas. What are the ten? First, dharma names, meaning form, feeling, etc., eyes, ears, etc. Second, person names, meaning those who practice by faith, those who practice by Dharma, etc. Third, dharma names, meaning sūtra, geya, etc. Fourth, meaning names, meaning the names of the various meanings revealed by the twelve divisions of scripture. Fifth, essential names, meaning syllables without meaning. Sixth, brief names, meaning common names such as sentient beings. Seventh, extensive names, meaning the individual specific names of each sentient being. Eighth, defiled names, meaning ordinary beings, etc. Ninth, pure names, meaning noble beings, etc. Tenth, ultimate names, meaning tathatā, the ultimate limit of reality (bhūtakoṭi), and so forth that pervade all dharmas. The treatise states: 'The objects of the distinction of ten names.' Explanation: These ten kinds of distinct names are all the spheres of bodhisattvas. That in which the bodhisattva abides is only in the tenth. Among the names that pervade all dharmas, it is further said in brief that names are of ten kinds and are the sphere of bodhisattvas: dharma names mean eyes and so forth; person names mean self, sentient beings, and so forth; dharma names mean the twelve divisions of correct teaching; meaning names mean the meanings of the twelve divisions of correct teaching; essential names mean thirty-seven combining vowel and consonant syllables, beginning with a and ā and ending with ha; brief names mean the conditioned and unconditioned; extensive names mean form, feeling, and so forth, as well as emptiness and so forth; defiled names mean ordinary beings and so forth; pure names mean srotāpannas and so forth; ultimate names mean the object of tathatā of all dharmas cognized by the supramundane wisdom and the subsequent supramundane wisdom that cognize the ultimate universal sphere. Furthermore, as for name, it refers to reaching the ultimate name, which pervades all dharmas. In all dharmas there is no distinction; this name is precisely the dharmadhātu. This dharmadhātu has as its characteristic the pervading of all dharmas and the non-differentiation of all meanings. Or it is called the non-conceptual sphere, and bodhisattvas abide only in this dharma. The remaining meanings are as in the separate section.
