Regarding the four fruits: first, the fruit of mellowing, superior in benefit; second, the fruit of setting forth, superior in benefit; third, the fruit of gathering retribution, superior in benefit; fourth, the fruit of vow-wisdom, superior in benefit. As for 'mellowing,' its essence is practice itself. As for 'setting forth,' its essence is understanding and wisdom, namely the wisdom of hearing and reflection. As for 'gathering retribution,' its essence is the five aggregates of karmic retribution. As for 'vow-wisdom,' taking accomplished function as its essence. The three fruits of mellowing, gathering retribution, and vow-wisdom are restricted to each respective ground and do not communicate across them. The single fruit of setting forth in its meaning extends across all grounds. The remaining meanings are as in the separate chapter.
