The chapter on the four dharmas means the four capable cognitions: first, conditions; second, dharma; third, operation; fourth, accomplishment. These four cognitions are also similar in category to the cognitions of the six characteristics, yet their approaches differ. First, 'conditions' are the conditions that accomplish a dharma. Second, 'dharma' is what corresponds to accomplish the dharma. Third, 'operation' means that conditions are able to accomplish [it]. Fourth, 'accomplishment' means fully discerning realization. Because cognition knowing dharmas is clear and bright, and pratītyasamutpāda is unhindered, it is called 'capable'. This meaning also applies to both the Ekayāna and the Triyāna. Why is this? Because by means of these four capable cognitions, within the Triyāna one accords with being free from the four slanders and tallies with the Middle Way. The remaining meanings are as in the separate chapter.
