How can one carry out the work of a Dharma master? First, season; second, right intention; third, sudden; fourth, continuous; fifth, gradual; sixth, orderly; seventh, sequence of phrasing and meaning; eighth, showing; ninth, rejoicing; tenth, encouraging; eleventh, complete; twelfth, not disparaging; thirteenth, not confused; fourteenth, in accord with the Dharma; fifteenth, accommodating the assembly; sixteenth, a compassionate mind; seventeenth, a tranquil mind; eighteenth, a sympathetic mind; nineteenth, not attached to gain and fame; twentieth, not praising oneself and disparaging others. The first, 'season', means departing from the eight seasonal difficulties. A verse in the Daśabhūmika-śāstra says: 'Like a king harboring total grief, / Sick, enraged, attached to desires, / In a perilous place without guards, / Or slandered without loyal ministers— / In these eight seasons, / A wise minister should not speak. / The mind-king is also like this; / At an improper time one should not preach.' The vocal karma of a Dharma master has two kinds, thus dividing the sūtra into two sections: in the earlier section of the sūtra, the Dharma master explains the profound and marvelous meaning of a Dharma master; in the later section of the sūtra, the Dharma master preaches the signs of eloquence conforming to the Dharma. This meaning conforms to the Triyāna; only in the Ekayāna is it ultimately fulfilled. The remaining meanings are as in the separate chapter.
