First, the benefit of seeing and hearing means that by relying on this universal Dharma, when one sees and hears the Tathāgata and this bequeathed Dharma, the roots of goodness planted become vajra seeds that cannot be destroyed and must certainly result in Buddhahood. As the "Chapter on the Manifestation of Nature" says: "If there is a place where sūtra scrolls are found, or where the stūpas and temples of the Tathāgata are, and one prostrates and makes offerings, those sentient beings will be fully endowed with roots of goodness, extinguish the afflictions and suffering, and attain the joy of the noble ones. O sons of the Buddha! Even if sentient beings who lack faith or hold wrong views see or hear the Buddha, the karmic retributions of the roots of goodness planted by those sentient beings through seeing and hearing will not be in vain, leading ultimately to nirvāṇa, severing all evil and unwholesome roots, and becoming fully endowed with roots of goodness. O sons of the Buddha! The roots of goodness planted by seeing, hearing, making offerings to, and revering the Tathāgata cannot be spoken of, cannot be compared by analogy. Why is this? Because the Tathāgata is inconceivable and surpasses all thought."
