Fourth, this single flower petal must extend itself to pervade and enter into all differentiated phenomena, and further be able to gather all those phenomena to make them enter within itself; therefore, being extended, it constantly gathers, simultaneously without obstruction. As the sūtra says: "Filling the ten directions with a single buddha-land, / And the ten directions entering into the one without remainder," and so forth. This is called the fourth gate of mutual interpenetration. Fifth, this single flower petal must abandon itself to be identical with the other, its entire essence being completely all those phenomena, yet it constantly gathers the other to be identical with itself, all of that [other] being completely its own essence; therefore, self is precisely other, and other is precisely self. Since self is precisely other, self is not established; since other is precisely self, other does not exist. The presence and absence of other and self are simultaneously made manifest. As the sūtra says: "A long kalpa is precisely a short kalpa, / A short kalpa is precisely a long kalpa," and so forth. This is called the fifth gate of mutual identity.
