Third, regarding time and dharmas: herein there are also five approaches: 1. Time does not flow while dharmas turn: that is, relying on the preceding ceasing induces posterior arising, and this arising and ceasing again induces the posterior—this is dharmas turning. However, past time does not reach the present, and the present does not reach the future—this is time not flowing. This means that with respect to time there is moment-to-moment interruption, while with respect to dharmas there is continuous constant flow. 2. Dharmas do not turn while time passes: that is, only through the perishing and ceasing of the past does the present exist; the perishing of the present can induce the future; across the three periods of time, moment to moment is without interruption—this is the passing flow of time. Past dharmas do not come to reach the present, and present dharmas do not go to reach the future; each abides in its own position without arriving at one another—this is dharmas not turning. This means that with respect to dharmas they originally do not reach one another, while with respect to time there is moment-to-moment non-interruption. 3. Both pass: because apart from dharmas there is no distinct time, therefore, since the flow of time and the turning of dharmas are non-dual, from beginningless time they have never briefly stopped. 4. Neither passes: because time that does not flow and dharmas that do not turn are non-dual, from beginningless time they have never shifted or moved. 5. Because the preceding four propositions are combined without separation, from beginningless time they flow without moving and pass without altering, without hindrance or obstruction; such is the essence of this dharma; it can be seen upon contemplation.
