Question: In applying remedies according to disease, how many demarcations are there? This is essential for cultivation, so please explain it. Answer: There are two kinds of disease: 1. coarse, which refers to deceitful cultivation; 2. subtle, which refers to not breaking through attachment to views. In the former there are also two: 1. internally in fact violating the precepts while externally displaying deportment and the like; 2. even if not violating them at all, doing so for the sake of being recognized by others, seeking fame and profit, being cunning, sycophantic, dishonest, and defensive of faults. In the second, the subtle, there are also two: 1. though possessing an upright mind, cultivating with attachment to a self; 2. though not attaching to a person, conceptualizing phenomena as existent, because real views are not broken through. The remedies are also of two kinds. The coarse is also twofold: 1. not concealing faults and misdeeds, and repenting with deep shame; 2. in what one cultivates, not mixing in deceit, being completely straightforward and pliant, adopting a most humble mind, and not displaying one's own virtues. In the second, the subtle, there are also two: 1. at all times of cultivation, knowing there is no self and no person, and not reckoning weariness and hardship; 2. contemplating all phenomena as equal and non-dual, of a single characteristic which is non-characteristic, penetrating principle to the utmost. 2. Stated comprehensively: simply when deeply contemplating the equality of all phenomena, none of the above diseases will fail to be cured completely. This is the practice of the Mahāyāna, explained in accordance with the meaning of the *Buddhadharmakośa-sūtra*.
