First: with respect to a single conditioned dharma in saṃsāric transmigration, it is conceptually divided into two: namely, the cessation of the prior thought and the arising of the posterior thought. A sūtra states: "Just as a seal impresses clay, the seal is destroyed and the impression is formed." Here, the destruction of the seal is cessation, and the formation of the impression is arising. Another sūtra states: "Dependent on the prior five aggregates, the posterior aggregates arise in continuity," and so forth; all are this meaning of saṃsāric transmigration. Herein, arising and ceasing in conflict and accord has two gates: first, general; later, distinct.
