First, in order to overturn the erroneous: that is, to overturn the revered teachers of the tīrthikas, namely Maheśvara and others, the Buddha Jewel is established; to overturn the erroneous treatises and the like of the tīrthikas, the Dharma Jewel is established; to overturn the erroneous assemblies and the like of the tīrthikas, the Saṅgha Jewel is established. Thus the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: "One who takes refuge in the Buddha is a true upāsaka and will never again take refuge in any other devas; one who takes refuge in the Dharma is free from killing and harming and will never again take refuge in any texts of the tīrthikas; one who takes refuge in the Saṅgha does not seek after the various tīrthikas, and so forth."
