Second, "cultivating the four postures": opening and revealing the Dharma-gates of the dharmadhātu on the dust mote and making them known to all living beings is walking. As a sūtra says: "Bodhisattvas have two kinds of walking: the practice of hearing the Dharma, because of delighting in listening to the Dharma; and the practice of expounding the Dharma, because of benefiting sentient beings." On the dust mote, the great wisdom of equality accords with and contemplates that the dust mote arises from conditions, unborn and animitta; this is standing. As a sūtra says: "The so-called abiding in accordance, because of abiding in the true Dharma." The profound meaning of quiescent emptiness on the dust mote is sitting. As a sūtra says: "The so-called sitting on the lion seat, because of expounding the profound Dharma." Sweeping away names and characteristics on the dust mote, the contemplating mind being quiescent and extinguished, tranquil and free of contrivance, is lying down. As a sūtra says: "The so-called lying down in quiescence, because body and mind are tranquil." Furthermore, it is lying down in dhyāna-samādhi, because of contemplating with right mindfulness. Not obstructing phenomena, the four postures are identical to phenomena while constantly being principle.
