Fifth, expanding the three piṭakas: the dust mote is the essential nature of the dharmadhātu and nirvāṇa, all manifested and illuminated by great wisdom. Recording the principle manifested in the dust mote with written words and inscribing it upon bamboo slips constitutes the sūtras, that is, the Sūtra-piṭaka. Observing the essential nature in the dust mote, not abiding in names and marks, following and subduing [afflictions], and putting an end to all evils constitutes the precepts, that is, the Vinaya-piṭaka. Applying wisdom regarding dharma to the essence and function of the dust mote, contrasting the real and the deluded, giving rise to wisdom and generating understanding, so that phenomena reach ultimate culmination constitutes the treatises, that is, the Abhidharma-piṭaka.
