First, explaining the two kinds of selflessness: That which can discriminate the marks of a dust mote is the person; the dust mote that is discriminated, possessing essence through conditions, is the phenomenon. Because marks are false, seemingly existent yet without real essence, this is the selflessness of persons (pudgalanairātmya). A sūtra says: 'Even a self cannot be found; how could a non-self be found?' Because the dust mote arises from conditions and lacks intrinsic nature, this is the selflessness of phenomena (dharmanairātmya). A treatise says: 'If a phenomenon arises from conditions, then it lacks intrinsic nature.' With both person and phenomena lacking a self, they form a single taste.
