Fourth is the virtue of universally enduring suffering on behalf of sentient beings. This means cultivating all practices not for oneself, but solely desiring to widely benefit the multitude of beings. Treating enemies and friends with equality, one universally causes them to sever evil, fully cultivates the myriad practices, and swiftly realizes bodhi. Furthermore, with great compassion and great vows, the bodhisattva uses his body as a pledge in the three evil destinies to ransom all suffering sentient beings, resolving to make them attain joy, to the end of future time with a mind free of retreat, not harboring even a hair's breadth of hope for repaying kindness from sentient beings. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'The cloud of vast compassion pervades all; relinquishing boundless bodies equal to the dust motes of kṣetras, through the cultivation power of an ocean of past kalpas, this world is now free from all defilements.' This means that sentient beings' deluded attachments flow on thought by thought, which is called suffering. The bodhisattva teaches them to comprehend that the aggregates are empty and quiescent, their self-nature originally non-existent; hence it is called leaving suffering.
