源應之曰：「夫有條不紊，表其網之在綱，探乎深辭，貴其通於輿義。然則君子僧博覽祖訓，負卓卓之識，豈獨疇昔有之乎！」源愛通義師傳慈恩祖教，講儒者五經，而考文責實，章灼同異，意猶吾心也。於是乎題之卷末云耳。

Yuan responded to him, saying: "Now, orderly without confusion exemplifies the net hung on its main cord; probing deep phrasing values its penetration into universally accepted meaning. If so, how could noble monks who read widely of the ancestral instructions and possess outstanding insight have existed only in former times?" Yuan cherishes Master Tongyi's transmission of the ancestral teachings of Ci'en and lecturing on the five classics of the Confucians, while collating texts, seeking the reality, and illuminating similarities and differences, his intention being identical to my own mind. Thereupon I inscribed this at the end of the scroll.
