In the winter, the eleventh month of the first year of the Xining era, I specially brought copies of the contemplation from various commanderies and once again requested Master Tongyi Zining of Qiantang to re-collate its words. Master Ning was deep in learning and understood antiquity, striving to examine various texts, contemplating them by morning and savoring them by evening. Thereupon he said to Yuan, "The cited words compiled by Xianshou have been recovered and attained! Please allow me to set forth one or two of them: Does not the Contemplation say, 'When function is distinguished according to essence, it is not without the condition of differentiation; when phenomena become manifest reliant on principle, they naturally have the form of a single limit'? This is one among the hundred gates of the Ocean of Meanings. Again it says, 'To rescue beings and guide the deluded, nothing surpasses this'—is this not the commentary and preface to the Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya Sūtra? Again it says, 'Within this gate it is divided into four propositions'—this too is the profound discourse of the Jin Commentary, and it is already clear!"
